Shannon Ridge Winery lies in the lesser known California wine region of Lake County. Located north of Napa Valley, the wines produced in the Lake County AVA are influenced by its high elevation, volcanic soils rich with minerals, and by Clear Lake which is California's largest inland body of water. This wine region has over 30 wineries with over 9,000 acres of vineyards.
In the Henry’s Seven, this addition of the aromatic white grape viognier has given the blend a fragrant lift of some extra pepper and enhanced the violet aromas. These are joined by fresh plum and more earthy, spicy characters. It has also allowed the wine to retain its youthful purple hued vibrance and added its weight to the fuller body.
The 2015 (13% alc./$10.00) starts with an intense dark red in the glass. There are strong aromas of ripe purple plum and dark cherry, with tastes of black licorice (which gives it a slightly medicinal taste), cherries and ripe strawberries. The tastes become more complex and smoother as the wine opens.
This is soft, and velvet and as elegant as the label is eye catching. Ripe cherry and plum fruit, fresh and juicy, jostles with gentle oak and all this is brought together with a pinch of thyme. It is a bright and vivacious wine that needs no additional accompaniment to make it shine.
If you enjoy Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc, this white wine from Greece might be a nice alternative and is worth a try. Skouras Moscofilero is a dry white Greek wine produced by George Skouras, owner and winemaker at Domaine Skouras. Established in 1987 the winery is located in Argolinda Valley in the southern region of Peloponnese, where the Nemea and Mantineia appellations are located.
